Children's Club January 2010: Early Fall 2010 - Hope You Like Purple - Part I

The recent ENK Children's Club (January 10-12, 2010 in New York) show was small and held collections with the usual little of this little of that mix of seasons. What I did see in many of the Fall 2010 lines was purple. Lots of purple. And rose and gray and electric blue, too. If you're thinking that I'm getting lazy and "repurposing" last fall's report where I predicted the same colors would be popular, you're wrong. There isn't a big change in color direction. What keeps Fall 2010 from being too déjà vu though, is great prints (think mushrooms), bold plaids, wonderful down vests and jackets and a strong "Best of the 1970s" feeling. Add folkloric patterns and embroidery to the mix and you've got a season with lots of whimsy.

CHRISTENING AND SPECIAL OCCASION:

PRECIOUS & FEW INFANTWEAR

Homebase: Brooklyn, NY

DESIGNER: Kathleen Lagas

Sizes: 3 to 6 months; Wholesale prices: Contact manufacturer for pricing

The name says it all. These are crème de la crème, made-to-order, handcrafted pieces that will be saved as heirlooms. Each design is painstakingly stitched from linen or silk and lined with a cotton slip that can be monogrammed. They're heavy on detail, yet the overall look is one of simplicity and grace.

Outstanding piece: The Heirloom Coat dress has a picture-framing collar over a delicate slip. It's available in silk or linen and has tiny tucks and touches of lace. The slip can be monogrammed in pale pink, blue or ivory. So lovely.
