Children's Club January 2010: Early Fall 2010 - Hope You Like Purple - Part III

SPORTSWEAR:

LA MADE KIDS

Homebase: Los Angeles, CA

DESIGNERS: Jeffeny Hughes and Megan Fox

Sizes: NB to 14 years; Wholesale prices: $8-$30

LA Made kids reflects Los Angeles style: cool, comfortable clothing that's effortlessly chic.

Outstanding pieces: This one-piece is pastel and yes, it's got ruffles and butterflies, but it isn't overly sweet.

This long dress in a knockout of a color, provides drama on the beach or anywhere.

LUCKY JADE

Homebase: Hermosa Beach, CA

DESIGNER: Leslie Pitts

Sizes: Girls 6 months to 8 years, boys 6 months to 4 years; Wholesale prices: $13-$22

What's Lucky Jade doing in the sportswear category? Don't they produce gorgeous, modern layette pieces and blankets? Indeed they do; the girls' and boys' sportswear collections are new. Like the giftware line, Pitts selects organic bamboo/cotton for the pieces, making them ultra soft with a graceful drape.

Outstanding pieces: Pitts is right on the money with these mix-and-match separates. The palette of raspberry, eggplant, sage and brown picks up on the season's key colors and the ruffles add a girlish touch to the modern shapes.

A bold brown, rust, olive and peacock palette adds richness to simply shaped pieces with a strong, retro feeling.

ME TOO

Homebase: Vejle, Denmark

DESIGNER: Ginnie Rasmussen

Sizes: Girls NB to 8 years; Wholesale prices: $9-$39

I'm all for understated taupe and gray, but sometimes a kid just wants to stand out in the crowd. The multi-piece Me Too collection of knits and wovens is for those "look-at-me" moments.

Outstanding pieces: You just have to smile when you see these shapes cut for comfort and printed with Sixties' patterns and funky, folkloric embroidery.

The lime stripes make the warm tones of the sweater dress pop and the matching tights just push the look into "too, too" adorable territory - and that's a good thing.

MISH MISH

Homebase: Closter, NJ

DESIGNER: Ilana Koren and Yael Ravid-Sagi

Sizes: Girls NB to 10 years, boys NB to 7 years; Wholesale prices: $8-$13

Each season, the designers tap into the current trends and produce a small collection of separates that are just right: Just fashion forward enough, priced fairly and with exuberant graphics and jolts of bright color.

Outstanding pieces: The tee and pants look like several carefully layered pieces, but there's a little trompe l'oeil magic going on. The shirt is one alien-friendly piece that looks like two layers and so are the cotton knit lined pants. Throw on the go-with-everything camouflage jacket and junior is ready for anything.

BLEMISH

Homebase: The Netherlands

DESIGNERS: Marjon Sluijter and Nicole Burges

Sizes: Girls and boys 2 to 12 years; Wholesale prices: $19-$37

"Easy" pieces can be a little too easy: limited on style, their color palette too commercial. That's not the case with Blemish. There's nothing in either the girls' or boys' collections that is restrictive in shape or overly trendy, yet each piece is fashion forward with a little edge and the color palette for both collections - warm gray, cocoa, jade and purple - is tweaked enough to give the hues character.

Outstanding pieces: The lean lines and military styling of the jacket add verve to a simple tee and playful striped leggings.

Nothing about the pea coat and versatile print shirt looks overly studied. Throw on the pieces and the boy is good (make that great) to go.
