Anne MacGilvray is a woman of many talents. A graduate of Northwestern University's Voice Performance department, MacGilvray has sung in opera companies and choral groups. When she wasn't singing, she managed a cognitive psychology research lab. It was there that she realized she "really enjoyed running projects - those behind-the-scenes business details that some people dread, like delving into spreadsheets. I love doing that."

That self-knowledge as well as organizational skills came in handy in 2008, when MacGilvray launched Adooka Organics, a collection of organic, sustainably produced sleep and sportswear. "Like many of you," says the founder, "concern about my son's immediate happiness and comfort soon led to thoughts about the kind of world he would grow up in. When I decided to start Adooka (my son's first word for duck), I knew I wanted it to be an eco-friendly company offering products made locally."

MacGilvray understands that being green is important, but catching a retailer's - and subsequently a shopper's -attention with attractive goods is paramount. "I design with a 'looks first,' and everything else - organic, easy-on/easy-off, U.S.-made - is a bonus," she adds. The "easy-on/easy-off" aspect of MacGilvray's designs is a full-inseam zipper that eliminates the 3 a.m. bleary-eyed fumble with multiple snaps routine.

For fall 2009, Adooka's casual sleepwear and sportswear mixes sleek modern shapes with "ruffly/girly" pieces. Each garment, made of heavy weight, organic cotton knit, is brightened with understated, judiciously employed appliqués. "I think babies look great in color, so I've chosen vibrant red, orange, green, and navy for the Fall/Winter collection," she says.

Her unique Eyes in the Dark appliqué came from "lying in bed listening to my baby wake for his 2:30 a.m. feeding, and picturing him in his room: just two big open eyes in the blackness of the night, waiting for me.  I put those eyes on a sleeper to add a little humor to those otherwise grumpy times!" MacGilvray says. The dusty navy color and playful back detail make this a great gift item.

The tunic and pants set blends girly/girl ruffles and modernist lines - two looks customers who purchase Adooka Organics insist upon.

The lettuce-edged tunic with its contemporary polka dot detail and coordinating sleek pants are as richly colored as an autumn leaf.

Don't fret little brother, there are plenty of beautifully colored, easy to coordinate pieces for you, too.
