ON THE INSIDE WITH MARILYN KIRSCHNER

Spring/Summer 2012 Fashion Trends on the Runways and at the Shows

One of my favorite things is following the biannual ready-to-wear collections as they unfold in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, and better still, finding similarities between the adult market and the children's market. Here are some of my favorite 'coincidences' (trends that were all over recent runways, and their youthful counterparts, spotted at the October 2-4, 2011 Children's Club).

Gone Mod: Mod inspired square-toed shoes and boots, and square buckles have never looked better trimming shoes and bags.

Prada

Pazitos

Made in the Shade: Sunglasses with attitude!

Prada

Sons + Daughters Jackie O inspired sunglasses.

Sons + Daughters made in the shade just like Ferris Bueller.

The Natural: Natural and off white cotton pullovers are so simple yet so distinctive.

Derek Lam

Fingerprints - it's a natural (natural cotton roll collar pullover).

Museum Mile: Modern art worthy bold color blocks

Alexander Wang graphic outfit.

BCBG color block dress.

Llum's cotton jersey graphic bold dress.

The Year of the Zebra: Graphic black and white is forever.

Michael Kors

Zoocchini graphic hooded towel.

Have Bag Will Travel: Chic oversized carryalls.

Bottega Veneta

Danzo's new canvas and oiled Italian leather bag.

Chach's new vinyl quilted weekend bag.

Flower Power:  Flowers, flowers and more flowers. There were all sorts of flower prints and especially, mod inspired sequined, beaded, or lifelike 3D flowers affixed on dresses, separates, shoes, bags, hats, and almost everything else.

Diane Von Furstenberg

Louis Vuitton embroidered flowers.

Andrea's Beau big floppy mod flower hair clips.

Dommie & Julie's handmade headbands with felt and wool.

Snow White: With all the pure white, innocent separates and especially, white dresses seen on recent runways and at the October Children's Club, spring 2012 will undoubtedly resemble one big wedding party.

Comme des Garcons

Rick Owens

Us Angels' special occasion gowns in white.

Sports Afield: Athletic and sports influences were seen in clothing and accessories and looked especially good this season.

Alexander Wang

Y-3 athletic shoes for baby and kids.

Nautical: Sea-worthy red/white, and navy/white striped tops, anchor motifs, and crisp navy pea jackets are classic, timeless, and forever.

Bill Blass navy blazer

Hatley's nautical T-shirt.

Armor Lux kids' unisex striped breton top.

Pastels: Sweet girlie pastels, reminiscent of Jordan almonds were everywhere.

Louis Vuitton

Ralph Lauren

Little Mass pastel chiffon with lace dress.

Amazing Lace: The paler incarnations may be newer, but black lace is always a favorite.

Valentino

Jannuzzi's lace print pant.

Pretty in Pink: Frothy cotton candy-like confections in tulle and chiffon abounded in every shade of pink, from the palest to the most vibrant.

David Charles' fuchsia confection.

Le Pink's hot pink dress.

Hi Ho Silver: Silver shoes and boots made an impact and it's the new neutral!

Chanel

Ragg Shoes

Fancy That: Decorated, dressed up flat sandals are the perfect touch for day and for evening.

Valentino

Ragg Shoes

Bow Tied: Distinctive bows, from very small to grandly oversized, decorate every manner of clothing and accessories.

Comme des Garcons

Andrea's Beau tailored drape satin bow hair bands.

Dommie & Julie satin bow hair clip.

Light as a 'Feather': Feathers and feather trims, especially in unexpected colors, never lose their appeal.

Ralph Rucci feathered tunic.

Confetti & Friends' neon colored feathers.

A 'Platform' to Stand On: Platforms, from the very subtle, to the most exaggerated, are giving footwear a lift this season.
