ON THE INSIDE WITH MARILYN KIRSCHNER

Around the World (in 20 minutes) at Child Magazine's New York Fashion Week Fall '07 Runway Show

An Elizabeth Hurley leopard print chiffon dress; a Bill Blass rust knit turtleneck and brocade bubble skirt; a Tory Burch zebra tunic with leggings; a Calvin Klein Jeans shearling jacket worn over a white T-shirt and jeans; a Cynthia Rowley gold empire dress worn under a brocade double breasted coat; a Nicole Miller gold sequined tunic worn over a black T-shirt and leggings; an Angel Sanchez red sleeveless silk pouf dress; a XOXO winter white faux fur capelet paired with a gold and cream tunic over ribbed leggings; a Sean Jean pinstripe parka with faux fur hood over a pinstripe tuxedo; Laura Bennett's plaid wool shorts with suspenders and knit turtleneck; Rocawear's black leather embroidered jacket over a printed T-shirt with plaid kilt.

No, I'm not listing some of the designs which came down the runways during the recent New York Fashion Week for Fall 2007. Nor am I describing how show attendees (editors, retailers, buyers, customers) dressed for the occasion. These were actually some of the approximately 53 outfits (culled from the most prestigious and well established children's companies, as well as some of America's top adult designers) that comprised the Child Magazine Fall 2007 Fashion Show, highlighting the newest looks for kids this coming season.

And all the above (winter white furs, fur capelets, fur shrugs, lavish fur trim, the color red, gold brocade, gold and silver metallic, sporty parkas, tuxedos, pinstripes, animal patterns, shearling, think cable stitch knits, shades of green, distinctive coats, conversation prints, tweeds and plaids) were not only some of the recurring trends for grownups, (and worn by show-goers), but are big trends for the younger set as well.

Even the kids' accessories, (a dizzying array of distinctive hats, embroidered and embellished shoes, rugged streetwise boots, and textured hose) provided by Stride-Rite, Payless, Primigi, Converse, Bear Feet, Frye Boots, Tic Tac Toe, Le Big, Zitomer Pharmacy, further reflected and mirrored all the important trends in the adult market.

And by the way, since Fashion Week was the coldest week of the year thus far, boasting temperatures in the single digits, it not only provided a perfect setting for which to view and appreciate the cold weather clothes (furs, layers, thick knits, hats of all kinds, heavy boots, quilted parkas) for next season, but made it necessary to actually wear them.

Now in its third year, the Child Magazine Show was held at The Salon in the Bryant Park Tents and dubbed, "A Trip around the World". The very first outfit out, a colorful Lurex metallic globe dress and shoes by Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, captured the global theme perfectly. The young models were not only positively adorable, amazingly poised with lots of 'attitude' to boot, but several were offspring or siblings of celebrities (such as Minge Lee and Aoki Lee Simmons, daughters of Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons; Justin Combs, son of P.Diddy; and Cody Lohan, Lindsay Lohan's little brother). It was a true delight, providing an entertaining and upbeat interlude - and even getting tired and jaded show goers to clap and smile. Which is saying a lot, especially on Friday, the last day of shows.
