ON THE INSIDE WITH MARILYN KIRSCHNER

Spring Ahead at the October 2010 Children's Club

There was no question about it, spring was in the air at the ENK Children's Club (October 3-5, 2010). While there are still many companies and exhibitors for whom the idea of seasons is irrelevant, and many others, who ignore seasons altogether, it was hard to ignore all the Spring/Summer 2011 offerings on view at the Javits Center, the venue for this large sprawling show.

There was something else I found hard to ignore. This particular show always 'falls' (sorry for the pun) smack dab in the middle of the Spring/Summer Paris Collections, which effectively and dramatically end the four-city marathon of biannual ready-to-wear shows. Having attended Mercedes Benz Fashion Week here in New York (held for the first time at Lincoln Center), I continued to follow the goings on in London and Milan, and remained highly interested in what was happening in the City of Lights. Being the highly visual person 'fashion' person I am, I could not help, (as I walked the aisles of the Javits Center on Sunday, the first day of Children's Club) but relate what I saw filling booths of countless exhibitors showing their wares for the young set (a dizzying assortment of bags, hats, jewelry, ready-to-wear, gift items, legwear, shoes, hair accessories, home décor, games, toys, etc.) to major trends for grownups, and as you know, I always delight in finding parallels, whether gloriously obvious or a bit more subtle.

Here are some of the important Spring/Summer 2011 trends (in random order) that showed up for adults on recent runways, and their 'counterparts' which were on view at Children's Club. (All photos by www.firstview.com)

1. 'Tulle' time girl: Frothy full skirted tulle prom worthy confections, abounded for girls of all ages.

2. 'Monkey' Business: Monkeys are always a child's favorite, but when Miuccia Prada features them prominently, you know they are not just for kids anymore.

3. Going Bananas: See above.

4. Anchors Away: Nautical themes always seem to resurface for spring and as it turns out, they were THE story at Christian Dior, as well as at Children's Club.

5. 'Clash' of the Titans: Bold brash colors, often neon and clashing (for maximum impact), ruled the runways…talk about the 'new' black.

6. Whiteout: Actually, there was such a 'whiteout' on spring runways, you could say white is the 'new' black.

Calvin Klein

7. Stripe it rich: Bold stripes, often in bright colors, mixed and matched, were all over the recent runways and showed up at the Children's Club as well.

8. The straw that broke the camel's back: All shades of beige, tan, nude, and camel, (which is THE color for fall) look especially good right now and could easily be considered the neutral of the season.

3.1 Phillip Lim

9. In Bloom: When it's spring, that means flowers, and perhaps even more so this season, as designers all over the globe seem to be in love (again) with flora and fauna.

10. 'Ruffles' have ridges: Ruffles (yet again) appeared on tops, blouses, skirts, and hems of dresses on many runways and it's clear the young set will be able to enjoy the flourish as well.

YSL

Cute as Buttons

11. The wedge: High platforms are still there but on the wane, currently being replaced by a lower more elegant wedge - which was seen in cork, rope, and wood on many runways.

Chanel

Michael Kors

12. A 'pattern' for living: Abstract, bold, graphic prints and patterns (including stripes of course), oft times mixed together, were a big story this season…and I mean all over the globe!

Prada

13. 'Spot' on: Animal patterns, especially leopard and cheetah, have become part and parcel of every fashionable gal's (and many a guy's) wardrobe.

14. What a 'snake'!: Exotic python and snakeskin (real and faux) turned up in clothing as well as bags and shoes in all four cities. And like everything else…it's not just for the adults.

Burberry

Kids Kapers

15. 'Open' Season: Open weave crochet and hand knits were stars of recent runways…and they showed up at the Children's Club as well (in many guises).

16. Biker Babe: Always and forever.

17. 'Fur' Sure: Fur is now being treated as a year round 'fabric'.

18. Gold Rush: Gold leather and gold metallics, are now year round and continue to show up in ready to wear as well as shoes and bags.

Marc Jacobs

Old Soles

19. The Mask: Masks and Masquerade Balls have been around for centuries and one of the biggest 'blowouts' was recently thrown in Paris by French Vogue, in honor of their 90th anniversary. All the tres chic guests wore inventive masks. It looks as though kids can get into the 'action' as well.

20. Amazing 'lace': What could be more feminine than lace, whether used allover or lace appliqués?

Marchesa

21. Light as a 'feather': On many runways, including that of Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, feathers were resplendent, and are a perennial favorite for gals of all ages (they were certainly all around the Chidlren's Club).
