Explosion Helps Spur Market for Young Children's Clothing
to Approach $17 Billion
(New York; September 27, 2005;
PRNewswire) The almost ubiquitous use of licensed
television, book and movie characters in young children's
apparel has helped drive sales of kids clothing and shoes
to $16.8 billion, according to The U.S. Market for
Infant, Toddler and Preschool Clothing, a new report from
market research publisher Packaged Facts, a division of
MarketResearch.com.
Sales of apparel and shoes for in
this market (ITP for shorthand) grew more than 17%
percent between 2001 and 2005, and are expected to top
$20 billion by 2010.
Much of this growth has been driven
by marketers' increasing use on clothing of characters
that appeal to the infant-to-5-year-old set. Licenses,
which typically cost marketers 5%-12% of wholesale
prices, payable as royalties, are applicable to every ITP
style, price, and age-niche. When product types are not
varied, licenses can be: There are licenses to suit
current kid favorites (Blue's Clues, Sesame Street,
Sponge Bob Square Pants), shopper-parents' nostalgic
favorites (everything from Mickey Mouse to Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles), and even what might be called
Parent-Flatterers, which bespeak parents' own lifestyles
(e.g., the recent use of Jeep and Professional Golfers'
Association logos on infantwear).
"Another significant factor
affecting sales growth in ITP clothing is the influential
fashion-conscious mom," said Don Montuori, publisher of
Packaged Facts. "Affluent women (and dads, to a much
lesser extent) who strive to dress distinctively are
outfitting their offspring in high-end, unique fashion as
well, adding high-dollar value to the market and creating
a new 'Hipster Baby' segment of the under-5 population in
the process."
The U.S. Market for Infant, Toddler
and Preschool Clothing examines the U.S. market for
