ENK Established Exhibitors Spring/Summer 2010: I'm Okay, You're Okay - Part I
After a year like 2009, "okay" isn't a bad place to be. That seemed to be the attitude at the recent ENK Children's Club show (October, 4-6 2009), when the answer to my inquiries concerning manufacturers' personal well-being and the health of their businesses was, "I'm okay." As long as I keep seeing familiar faces and exciting collections like those exhibited at the show, well, I'm okay with okay.
LAYETTE: KUMQUAT Homebase: Los Angeles, CA For spring, designer Angelyn de la Garza offers a line of delicate, whimsical patterns (lots of owls) and stripes on soft cotton knits. The asymmetrical buttons and generous hood adds a twist to the usual one-piece. (Fits NB to 4T; collection $5-$19) Tel: 323 383-3043 E-mail: Angelyn@kumquatbaby.com
COTTON KNIT GROUPS: GROOVY BLUEBERRY CLOTHING COMPANY Homebase: New Paltz, NY The Groovy Blueberry Clothing Company's booth looked like a head shop circa 1972. The only thing missing was a black light. You don't have to light up though, to appreciate Amy Cohen's tie-dyed cotton and velour pieces. The colors, as you can see, aren't subtle and the effect on one's mood is, well, groovy, too. (Fits 3 months to 14 years; collection $9-$28) Janis Millstein Sales (Janis Millstein) Tel: 212 239-4600 E-mail: Janisales@aol.com jamesgirone.com/janismillsteinsales
JAXXWEAR Homebase: Greenwich, CT Heather Jaffe has added Pima cotton wovens to her Pima cotton knits. The new pieces, like the cargo pants, have a cool, silky hand and are cut for comfort. (Fits 3 months to 4T; collection $4-$21) Tel: 203 252-0238 E-mail: Info@jaxxwear.com
SPORTSWEAR: INFANT AND UP: ZUTANO Homebase: Cabot, VT Sometimes it's obvious why a particular motif grabs hold of the fashion market. The peace symbol is easy: this summer was the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. The owl, this season's must-have imagery, is a mystery to me. Is it just the cute factor? Designer Uli Belenky does the nocturnal creature proud with Owls, her Sixties' inspired, brilliantly colored ode to the bird. The print is shown here in a swing top with shorts in the latest "ripstop" fabric, cotton with a chintz like hand. Boys will adore the whimsical Il Postino print (presents are being delivered from one friend's house to another's) tee and pants in white and a refreshing, go-with-everything shade of taupe. (Fits sizes preemie to 4T; collection $2-$20) Tel: 800 287-5139 E-mail: Zutano@zutano.com
3 POMMES Homebase: Lyon, France 3 Pommes multi-piece collection is a favorite of mine for its flair and ouchless price points. All their color groups are lovely this season, especially the muted grays and lavenders. Here spring's hottest shape: the bubble gets a note of sophistication with an interesting woven dot design and a well-matched, glitter-edged gray cardigan. (Fits NB to 12 years; Contact showroom for prices) Groupe Zannier USA (Sophie Jaworski) Tel: 212 279-7672 jamesgirone.com/groupezannierusa
BOBINETTE Homebase: Las Vegas, NV With one eye in the 1950s and the other in the 21st Century, Lorraine LeTac creates boys' designs that are a little Fonzie and a lot metrosexual. This season she's big on mixing plaids with pinstripes for a touch of Bespoke elegance. (Fits NB to 7 years; collection $19-$21) Thread Showroom (Terra Fazzio) Tel: 212 801-2387
CHERISE Homebase: Stamford, CT Each season designer Sachin Batra sources gorgeous Indian textiles and trims for his feminine tween-to-junior sportswear collection. Channeling the Summer of Love, he blends the season's hippie-centric mood into this appealing peasant top and Indian print short-shorts. (Fits 7 to 16 years; collection $22-$40) Tel: 203 329-0719 E-mail: Info@cheriseinc.com
CHILDISH CLOTHING Homebase: Culver City, CA Skulls, peace symbols, punk graffiti, clouds and thunder are the kind of edgy motifs that have put Skye Hoppus' collection on the kidswear map. Her new Lounge Around and underwear sets are just as hip as her sportswear, just smaller. (Fits NB to 12 months; $20 for a 3-piece set, matching blanket $15) Tel: 310 287-9957 E-mail: Info@childishclothing.com
