Outstanding pieces: Modern lines and details keep the elegant coat and jumper from looking too traditional. The coat, for instance, is an obvious partner to the jumper or any skirt, and also makes a chic topper for jeans. The workmanship, as one has come to expect from Zapf, is impeccable. This season, they're deep into plum - enriching the tone and spinning off separates in a variety of purplish casts. The color gets more dimensions by added textures - nylon, pointelle, fuzzy sweaters and silky tops.
Outstanding pieces: A plum perfect puffer and playful purple pieces.

APPAMAN Homebase: New York, NY Sizes: NB to 14 years; Wholesale prices: $10-$48 DESIGNER: Harald Husum They started with edgy T-shirts and now there's no end in sight to the new lines Husum and company continue to launch.
Outstanding pieces: Appaman Mini is a collection for infants of garment-dyed separates in cool not babyish colors. Details such as stitched kneepads and distressed edges lend a worn hipster appeal.
For three seasons, Appaman has featured the Capsule Collection, a small group of garments designed by a fine artist. For fall, the painter and graphic artist Rachel Salomon has created three pieces. Salomon uses the Zip Placket dress as a canvas for whimsical line drawings. Each of the dresses: Cats, Hummingbirds, and Starry Night are printed with delicate line drawings and have one-of-a-kind appeal.

This season, there are hip mixed prints and fun trims trim as well. And, yes, the signature Baby Lulu brimmed hat is still going strong.
Outstanding pieces: It's the details that make this piece. The mushroom pattern is hot for fall and the design looks especially fresh in the deep pink and taupe combination.
