SUPPLIER SHOWCASE

ON THE INSIDE WITH TINA BARRY

ENK Spring/Summer 2011 Established Lines: On the Rebound - Part II

LA MADE KIDS

Homebase: Los Angeles, CA

DESIGNERS: Megan Fox and Jeffeny Hughes

Sizes: LA Made Mini NB to 18 months; Wholesale prices: $8-$21

LA Made's Mini line offers simple, flirty cotton knits in rich candy colors.

Outstanding pieces: The smocked neckline, the comfortable shape, and those bloomers! Sweet, yes. But modern too.

LUCKY JADE

Homebase: Hermosa Beach, CA

DESIGNER: Leslie Pitts

Sizes: 2 to 8 years; Wholesale prices: $13-$21

Pitts has a comfortable niche in the kids' gift market with a popular collection of eco-friendly layette pieces and coordinating blankets. Her new Rumba Girls line of ultra-soft bamboo and cotton separates should expand her sales base.

Outstanding piece: The shape has a nostalgic Sixties feeling (like something Joni Mitchell would wear), the color flatters everyone and touches such as lettuce edging lend flirty charm.

MAGNOLIA BABY

Homebase: Shrewsbury, NJ

DESIGNER: Claudia Collins

Sizes: Preemie to 24 months; Wholesale prices: Contact manufacturer

Collins' Pima cotton pieces have a fine, silky hand and her palette is classic: pale blue and pink, cream and white. Little details such as hand embroidery make them special.

Outstanding piece: When a tutu is too much, this little set offers just enough tulle.

PEEKABOO BEANS

Homebase: Montreal, Canada

DESIGNER: Traci Costa

Sizes: sizes 3 months to 8 years; Wholesale prices: contact manufacturer

Designers this season are in love with ruffles and Costa is no exception. What keeps her multi-piece collection from toppling into frill-frenzy is her color sense and modern shapes. She mixes a tincture of brown or gray into her hues so even if a child piles on the pieces, the colors look soft. Her shapes are cut close to the body and she knows how to work a pleat or dart so the garments flatter the wearer.

Outstanding piece: The Very Fairy Dress. There were lots of dresses at the show with ruffles at the border. This piece one-ups the usual suspects with a dramatic curve at the hem and two tones instead of one.

RED WAGON

Homebase: El Segundo, CA

DESIGNER: Afton Farley

Sizes: 3 months to 4T; Wholesale prices: $12-$22

Farley's collection of mostly organic cotton solids, burnouts, basics and subtle prints mix and matches effortlessly. The palette of charcoal, rose and lilac is saleable yet subtle thanks to a tincture of gray in the warmer tones and a note of purple in the charcoal.

Outstanding pieces: An asymmetrical hemline and a bit of tulle turn a basic tee into something special. Burnout leggings add textural interest.

SCOUT ORGANICS

Homebase: Oakland, CA

DESIGNERS: Mimi and Ellen Leinbach

Sizes: NB to 6 years (some styles up to 8 years); Wholesale prices: $5-$26

Among many of Scout Organics attributes is the Leinbachs' eye for color. Every season their colors look fresh in the marketplace.

Outstanding piece: The Stella Dress is deceiving. It looks like a simple throw on, but notice the one-shoulder tie, the funky colors, the V-neckline with the flattering gathers and the delicate hummingbird graphic - not so simple after all.
