Welcome
our 'Best in Show' Spring/Summer 2011 Newcomer: Blu Pony
Vintage
You
know that "love-at-first-sight" tingle? That's what I
felt standing outside the Blu
Pony Vintage booth at
Children's
Club (October 3-5,
2010). Designer Bonnie
Matthews has the whole
gestalt: a vision that's seen through from booth design -
very Ralph Lauren with earthy colors, a zebra rug and
antique dressers - to the old-fashioned postcard-style
advertising, and right down to the French
seams.
Matthews design experience is
evident in her new endeavor. She owns
Red Ant
Productions, a still
photography company. A fashion shoot with acclaimed
photographer Robert
Deutschman, that featured
vintage children's clothing, brought an enthusiastic
response from retailers. Encouraged by the feedback,
Matthews created looks based on the garments in the
photos and Blu Pony Vintage was born.
"Blu Pony Vintage takes a
fundamental approach to children's apparel
manufacturing," says Matthews. "We make it locally in Los
Angeles, with the care and detail of the clothing that
originally inspired me: vintage pieces of the 1920s and
1930s."
To that end, the garments are
crafted to last. Only pure cotton, silk and wool are
employed. In homage to the earlier periods, there are no
zippers; the items close with antique brass buttons or
horn buttons. The color palette of cream, navy and beige
evokes an American Gothic mood: a time of sepia-toned
photos, penny candy stores, the aromas of horses, hay and
lemon verbena cologne.
Another plus: All the fabrics are
pre-washed before they go into production. "The process
can be very toxic to the environment and the clothes, but
Blu Pony was able to find a local facility that is
leading the way in chemical-free washing. Even our
hangtags are eco-friendly," says Matthew.
Our heartfelt congratulations go to
our "Best in Show
Newcomer" for Spring/Summer
2011 Bonnie
Matthews at
BLU PONY
VINTAGE. Her unique
sportswear collection "embraces the past and in doing so,
creates a modern and innovative tradition for the
future."
BLU PONY
VINTAGE
Homebase: South Pasadena,
CA
DESIGNER: Bonnie
Matthews
Sizes: 2 to 6 years; Wholesale
prices: $32-$82
This fellow is as dapper as Henry
Higgins in the faded indigo George Bernard S. cotton and
linen double-breasted jacket worn with the Joseph B.S.
cotton and rayon trousers.
There's a little Eliza Dolittle in
the Mary M.B. top and Lillian H. dress. Both are
undeniably nostalgic yet their easy shapes are modern.
Look closely at the top and you'll see vintage-style lace
inserts that add texture and depth to the piece. The
deep, feather-shaped cotton lace edging the dress is
reason enough to splurge. The coordinating lion is
optional.
