ON THE INSIDE WITH TINA BARRY

FALL 2012/WINTER 2013 TRENDS

Last winter was a weird winter weather wise. The snow fell once. I never got to wear my fur-lined trapper hat or boots, and daffodils popped up in March. If I don't think about what those occurrences mean about our climate, I'll happily accept the warmer conditions. Let's embrace the new childrenswear fashion season!

COLOR

Women's and menswear designers dive into rich, warm plum and red tones, building depth through monochromatic pairings and sometimes spiking the looks with hot orange. Think of a Mark Rothko painting.

Charlotte Ronson heats up the runway in a mix of warm tones.

Lush plum velvets spiked with mustard from Daniele Allessandrini.

Masala Baby's fusion fashion: warm tones, Ikat print and an unusual tulle-trimmed hemline.

Rachel Roy teams royal with emerald for a chic monochromatic look.

No extraneous details on Liho's Tanja dress, just fabulous shape and color. (Liho USA)

Anna Sui colors a sweet ditsy print dress in charcoal, teal and mustard.

Velvet softens teal and greened-toned mustard at Burberry.

Hot off the game-changing runway at the Vogue Bambini/PetiteParade show: K16's collection: a trio of tones equal magic on the runway.

Black and white and every grayed-neutral in between: entire collections of the subdued tone worn in tandem, or in black and white for a graphic punch.

Neutrals at Agnes b men.

Le Vestiaire de Jeanne works gray in tones and textures.

Finding the playful side of white and gray at Redfish.

Edgy black: Christian Siriano's stunning gown is no hot mess. Ditto for Sierra Julian's hip dress with pleather bodice detail.

PATTERN

Color block designs may reference the Sixties, yet on both the adult and kids' runways, the look was entirely contemporary.

A stunning color-block coat from Antonio Beradi.

Hudson Threads makes graphic magic with this color-blocked beauty.

A constellation of star prints, like this sparkler from Agnes B, hit the women's wear runways.

Two collections seeing stars:

Red Wagon Baby hitches the fall season on a star.

A whole new take on stars and stripes from Tea.

Ikat designs, repeating tile prints and dramatic totem motifs hit the adult market, and found its way onto kids' apparel too.

Drama on the Jean-Charles Castelbajac's runway.

Drama at Stella Industries.

Ikat to Scandinavian-influenced patterns, collegiate stripes to vintage wallpaper prints. Designers fell hard for pattern.

Animal prints roared down the runway at Felipe Oliveira while
Millions of Colors purred on the kittenwalk.

Women's wear designers worked sedate flowered chiffons as well as Matisse inspired floral motifs like this astounding coat from Comme de Carcon.

Vintage florals for the wee ones:

Bouquets from
Baby Steps.

And not so wee ones:
Us Angels' rose bedecked beauty.

THEMES

Collegiate looks, chic glam styling, and rugged pieces to mix and match.

Prep a Porter: Iconic patterns such as argyles mix it up with clashing colors, dirty denims, herringbone and corduroy.

Blugirl's over the top argyles play with stripes and faux fur.

Petit Patapon's packs a wallop of pattern.

Trout fishing in America: Trend conscious yet ready for the outdoors.

Rich plaids at Nautica.

Western plaids at
Knuckleheads and funky chic plaids from Me Too.

Chic chicks and the guys that love them: Sophisticated silhouettes and grown up glamour, without the hard, rock 'n roll edge.

Faux fur gives the most casual outfit a touch of luxury.

Charlotte Ronson finds subtle ways to play with color and texture.

Full-on bohemian charm at
Eliane et Lena.

Animal prints, sometimes on capes, caplets, and stoles made an impact on runways.

Dolce & Gabbana's opulent animal skin cape.

Two subtler takes on the skin print and cape:
Claesen's mixed prints and Camille & Sophie's ultra soft poncho.
