Between the Shows: December 15, 2008 Editor's Note: Some of our sponsor companies prefer to keep their children's businesses out of the national and regional wholesale trade show circuits (or at least not attend all the shows every season). So to keep you abreast of collections you won't find (or find infrequently) in trade venues, we've started this new column. We think you'll like our "Between the Shows" reviews as much as you've told us you enjoy our "Trade Show Reports" coverage.
PARADE ORGANICS Homebase: Vancouver, BC DESIGNER: Laura Sage Sizes: NB to 2T; Wholesale prices: $6-$16.50 Since its inception in 2003, this infant clothing collection of unisex organic goods has been a hit parade with "hipsters, grannies, greenies, and anyone who calls their nephew 'Bug,'" says Sage, who co-owns the collection with Bernard Tierney. Sage is as concerned with offering a beautiful product as she is with its creation. "We support responsible fair-trade practices and use only pesticide and chemical free 100 percent certified organic cotton and sustainable materials," she says. For Fall 2009, her Pure Collection of organic baby basics and the Playful Collection of silk-screened designs "represent the mood of the season: more earth inspired than trend inspired." Look for a green market palette of pear, cocoa, mandarin orange, and grape. The side-tie one-piece speaks of new beginnings. Baby will be cozy in this anything but bashful shade of Mandarin orange. QUEENIE CLIPS Homebase: Commack, NY DESIGNER: Gina Falco Children's Sizes: Infant-girls; Wholesale prices $3.25 and up (depending on custom designs) Can one word launch a company? "Amazing" did it for Gina Falco. That's what she heard over and over when her daughter Angelina sported the children's hair clip Falco designed. Falco, who comes from a long line of imaginative women, gives her mother credit for inspiring her creativity: "My mother was a talented floral designer who touched so many people with her beautiful designs and unique creations. She continues to fuel my fire and passion for design. I dedicate Queenie Clips to her - she was my queen!" Falco's mother is evident in the clean designs and understated touches of crystals and rhinestone motifs in these lovely pieces for Fall 2009: Little girls will feel just like princesses wearing the puffy, just bloomed Big Flower with its sprinkling of glittering rhinestones. The Princess Daisy adds a touch of fairy tale sparkle to a child's outfit. Tel: 631-499-2412 E-mail: Customerservice@queenieclips.com
RIO WEAR FITNESS Homebase: Chappaqua, New York DESIGNER: Denise Hand Children's Sizes: 4 to 10 years; Approximate wholesale prices: $12-$26 "Rio Wear... it all started with one woman's ambition to bring the essence of Brazilian style to the American woman's exercise wardrobe," says Hand, the president and designer of Rio Wear's women's and children's fitness line. Wanting to continue her healthy lifestyle of smart diet and exercise, the Brazilian-born Hand found the "tired black pants and white T-shirts typically offered by exercise retailers" a far cry from the better fitting and flattering styles of her homeland. To style her garments, Hand turned to high quality Supplex, a material that is lightweight, breathes well, dries quickly and is available in range of attractive colors. New this season is the Supplex Muscle Tank and Pant X & X. The top's racer-back design allows a full range of motion and durable, every day support. The tank, in always slimming black, is available with pink (as shown), blue, or green detailing. Great with the tank or paired with any casual top is the X & X pant. The boot-cut styling and extra shot of detail on the lower calves make them eye-catching, while Supplex means a day of comfort at play or in school. Tel: 914-449-6224 E-mail: Denise@riowear.net
